Danna Haba, O.D., FCOVD
Founder of Shelby Eye Care in 1987, and the Excel Institute of Shelby in 2004, Dr. Haba specializes in behavioral optometry and vision therapy, working extensively with children and adults with difficulties in learning or vision perception, physical handicaps, or brain injuries. Dr. Haba graduated with honors from the University of Missouri College of Optometry in 1985, was a past adjunct professor for the Michigan College of Optometry, and has been involved in a cooperative research project with the University of Detroit. She serves nationally as a frequent lecturer and consultant to educational, rehabilitation and therapy providers, as well as other eye care professionals. A Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, Dr. Haba is a member of AOA, COVD, MOA and OEP and is also Consultant Director of Vision Rehabilitation at Special Tree.
Jennifer Place, O.D.
Dr. Place graduated with honors from the Michigan College of Optometry in 2001. Her training includes treatment of ocular disease at the Detroit VA Hospital, low vision examinations at the Saginaw Special Needs Clinic, and ocular emergencies at Michigan State University. She is a recipient of the Vistakon Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care and the Michigan College of Optometry Senior Research Award. Dr. Place is a member of the Metro Detroit Optometric Society, the Michigan Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association. She was a volunteer for Opening Eyes, a program providing eye exams for athletes in the Michigan Special Olympics, and participated on an international mission to St. Lucia offering eye care to those in need.
Sandra Kuna COVT
Sandra has worked in the vision therapy field for 19 years. She received her B.A. in sociology from Buffalo State College, and in 2003 she became a Certified Optometric Vision Therapist (COVT).
After receiving her B.B.A. from Walsh College, Jennifer spent several years gaining experience as an account executive, and as a department supervisor. She directs the day-to-day operation of our office, and her expertise makes her a vital member of our staff.
Jane McClure, COVT
Lead Therapist Jane McClure received her certificate as Certified Optometric Vision Therapist (COVT) from the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD). Before joining our team at Excel Institute in 2006, she worked as a Vision Therapist at Birmingham Vision Care. Jane has an Early Childhood degree and certificate in Montessori Education.
Vision Therapist Sandy Nelson is a Certified Child Development Associate. Her 14 years experience as a paraprofessional POHI, where she assisted with Physical and Occupational therapy, has given her great insight in working with children of all ages.
Patient Care Coordinator, Newsletter/Communications Coordinator
Betty began her career working for Excel Institute of Shelby in 2004 as a Patient Care Coordinator. Betty has added Communications Coordinator to her job title. Our newsletter is the result of Betty’s initiative, and she also maintains our social media, utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and Yelp to keep everyone updated on news, events and stories of vision therapy success.

As patient care coordinator, Danielle is exceptionally qualified with more than ten years of experience in the customer service field. Her skill and compassion is always apparent as she interacts with our patients and their families each day.
Financial/Marketing & Maintenance Manager
Doug has been with Shelby EyeCare for 19 years and Excel Institute for seven. He manages the finances and marketing efforts of both companies, is involved in all regulatory issues (i.e., government and association requirements) and helps to maintain the building and property. Doug has a degree in packaging engineering and earned his masters in English.
